This is the third video in my ”Neurodiversity” series that features my new book The Power of Neurodiversity: Unleashing the Advantages of Your Neurodivergent Brain (Completely Revised and Updated Second Edition). In this video I talk about the metaphors we use to describe the brain. I take issue with the way in which adults explain the brain to neurodivergent kids (especially those with ADHD), comparing it to a machine (a car that doesn’t run right, or a Ferrari that runs too fast with rudimentary bicycle brakes). Instead we should be teaching kids about how their brain works using cutting edge information about the brain, including neuroplasticity, growth-mindset, and rain forest metaphors (in the video I compare the brain to a rain forest). I’d like to see someone write a children’s book on the rain forest brain. I think it would be a best-seller!
