This is the sixteenth video in my series introducing my new book The Power of Neurodiversity. In this video, I give a short history of ADHD, noting terms that were employed in the past (such as hyperkinesis, and minimal brain dysfunction), and then using a timeline to chart the growth of ADHD from a 1971 speech given by the Canadian psychologist Virginia Douglas, through the 1980’s when parent advocacy groups like CHADD got involved, to its increasing visibility on talk shows and in TV shows and movies, to the connections forged between drug companies and medical doctors, and finally to the steep climb in the numbers of kids and adults identified with ADHD in the last ten years.
